Not to erase the original, but to deepen it. To give it more space. More contrast. And to reflect where I am today, not only as a scent designer, but as a person.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe inspiration has always been the idea of home. I grew up in a house where joy, discomfort, and sorrow lived alongside each other. I was a queer, mixed race girl living amidst the beauty and the tension. Where jasmine bloomed outside my bedroom window, the scent of steamed rice filled the kitchen, and I was navigating what it meant to be more than one thing.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI remember the first moment I was othered before I even started kindergarten. I didn’t know exactly what was happening, but I knew it had to do with my identity. My mom and khun yai (grandmother) always made it known that my Thai heritage was a source of pride and power, so it was confusing to me why others didn’t feel the same way.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003eI was full of Mixed Feelings, and still am, today. The house where I grew up was not often comfortable, so I learned to cherish my freedom. The outside world didn’t know how to accept me, so I learned to accept myself. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMixed Feelings represents so much more than I could ever capture with words, which is why I needed to express it through fragrance. The notes of jasmine and rose make it beautiful, the lychee adds sweet moments of joy, and my favorite part, the steamed rice, is like a soft blanket of comfort.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMy kun yai only knew a few words of English, but the one phrase she did know was “I love you.” That, is my constant. Peonies represent Ingrid’s past, often fraught relationship with femininity. Muddled raspberries, juniper and lemon give nod to the Clover Club – a drink once reserved for wealthy white men, that fell out of fashion when it was perceived as being feminine. Thai rose apple (\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eชมพู่ or \"\u003c\/span\u003echompoo\") incorporates her Southeast Asian heritage and represents the entwined nature of culture and identity. Crinkled book pages pay homage to mid-century lesbian pulp fiction, which was often written off as salacious fluff, but became a lifeline for millions of queer women. Finally, spicy chili peppers add an unexpected heat while illustrating the edges within femininity. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eSITC captures the tension of simultaneously being at odds and completely in love with who you are – something Ingrid has felt all her life. Together, these notes come together to create a scent that is glamorous, complex, provocative and multifaceted. It is never just one thing. Her girlhood was cherished, protected, and celebrated. Many of my clearest childhood frustrations around my identity revolve around food, and scent is the most natural vehicle for me to explore these feelings.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eThe feeling of wanting all the sugary cereals on Saturday mornings, but going to dim sum instead. The feeling of wanting soda, but my first exposure to caffeine being jasmine and green teas. The feeling of having grass stained clothes instead of bows in my hair.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eMy desire to be accepted into this mold of white American culture largely began with food. I couldn’t change my skin, my eye color or my heritage, but food felt like something within reach. I could change what I ate and maybe have just a small taste of what it was like to be to be \u003cem\u003ethat\u003c\/em\u003e girl. I remember thinking, “Please, can I just be a blonde white girl named Kimberly?” Even writing that now as a 35 year old woman touches a tender place in my heart.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eI was walking down Alberta Street in Portland, OR drinking a jasmine matcha from a coffee shop called Case Study. When I took my first sip, the idea for this scent completely solidified all at once. I tasted the slight grassiness from the matcha, a hint of floral and then, to my surprise, this sweetness that reminded me of fruity cereal.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eIt felt like all these elements of my past and present coming together in a single moment. I knew I had to translate what I was tasting into a scent.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eTo create an accurate portrayal of matcha, we used not only a matcha accord, but green grass and sesame seeds to round it out and enhance the grassy, somewhat umami quality of real matcha. Jasmine petals bring a subtle floral aspect, while rainbow cereal and vanilla milk lend a unique sweetness to the overall scent. What we’re left with is a gourmand\/floral that’s layered, nuanced and uplifting.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eFragrance is complex and so is being human. Creating this scent is a way for me to process those painful emotions from my past and transform them into something beautiful.
