What even is Pandan?

What even is Pandan?

Fall is here, and we’ve put our own spin on the season’s most ubiquitous flavor. Introducing our newest scent: the Pandan Spice Latte candle.

What exactly is pandan? And how did we come up with the idea?

First, let’s talk pandan. We know not everyone is familiar with this scent note. If you have Southeast Asian roots, pandan is more than just a flavor. It’s nostalgia and a reminder of home. And if you’ve ever tried to describe it to a friend who’s never had it, you know how hard that is, because it’s truly, wonderfully one of a kind. So here’s The New Savant breakdown. Take notes!

What is pandan?

Pandan is a long green leaf from Southeast Asia commonly used in desserts and some savory dishes. It looks grassy, but the taste and aroma are unlike anything else. Think of it as the vanilla of Southeast Asia: floral, nutty, warm, comforting, and it pairs well with coconut like taro or ube does.

Our co-founder and chief creative/scent designer, Ingrid Nilsen, said pandan pairs well with coconut the same way that taro, ube would. But it’s not at all like matcha. “It won’t at all give you that grassy flavor.”

What is the Pandan Spice Latte Candle?

Inspired by Thai cafe culture, Pandan Spice Latte is our own take on the traditional, beloved, PSL. With notes of cardamom dusting, shaved nutmeg, warm pandan, frothy milk, and autumn leaves. Pair it with a knit infinity scarf and your favorite fall boots. That's a non-negotiable!

Finally, how did this come to be? All of our scents come from different places––but one thing they have in common is they’re a personal process of creativity, serendipity and patience.

In this case, the suggestion for using a pandan note in a candle came from a thoughtful member of our community. Ingrid always kept the idea in her back pocket, but wasn’t sure how to bring it to life. Until now.
